How to Ensure a Proper Fit
It's always a good idea to measure, even if your staff or associates say they know their size. The following guidelines are important to remember in measuring for proper fit:
- Take all measurements in inches.
- When the measurement falls between sizes, order the next larger size.
- Take measurements by holding the tape straight and snug, but not tight.
- Check the size scale of all garments being ordered to ensure that all measurements were taken at the proper points.
Shirts
Neck size determines the size of the shirt. Measure the circumference of the neck at the thickest
portion. Sleeve length is measured by placing one end of the tape at the bottome of the collar at the center
of the back and marking the distance around the elbow to the bottom of the wrist. [Bend arm slightly.]
Pants and Jeans
Waist size determines the size of the pants/jeans. Measure the circumference of the waist just
above the hip bones, and over the shirt [not the pants]. Inseam measurement is taken from the
base of the crotch to the top of the shoe or boot [and if 100% cotton denim jeans are being
ordered, allow for 3% shrinkage].
Coveralls and Jumpsuits
Measure the circumference of the chest at the fullest part, keeping the tape up under the arms. Use
this measurement when ordering. However, if the waist size measures larger than one's chest
size, use the waist size when ordering. Note: Those taller than 5'10" will need a Long/Tall
coverall or jumpsuit, and regardless of height - measurement should always be taken over
clothing - the kind of garment(s) typically worn with the coveralls.
Jackets
Chest size is taken at the fullest part of the chest, keeping tape under arms. Measurement should
be taken over regular clothing. Sleeve length is measured by placing one end of the tape at the
bottom of the collar at the center of the back and marking the distance around the elbow to the
outer edge of the wrist.
Lab Coats & Shop Coats
Chest size determines the size to order for these garments. Measure the circumference of the
chest at the fullest part, keeping the tape up under the arms.
